At J H Godwin sport and physical activity is very important to us all. This year 2022, we have retained Active Mark Gold for our efforts to encourage participation rates for all children. We are continiuing to challenge ourselves and are this year working towards Active Mark Platinum! We work closely with Blacon High School to plan our sporting competitons. We have worked closely with a number of extra-curricular providers to give our children access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities including fencing, tennis and street dance! Our school staff also work very hard to provide a wide range of opportunities and additional activities which include dodgeball, football, yoga, fishing, dancing and golf to name just a few.

We encourage physical activity throughout the school day with active playtimes and lunchtimes. We take part in activities such as: skipping, climbing and hula hoops at lunch time and a huge range of both sporting and non-sporting clubs after school.

At J H Godwin, each class partakes in two hours of sport every week. In Key Stage 2 (years 3, 4, 5, 6) our children go swimming to ensure they leave in year 6 being able to swim at least one length. We take the teaching of water safety very seriously within the curriculum (alongside many other aspects of safety). Living by many canals and the River Dee, we teach all of our children how to stay safe around expanses of water and how to react safely if someone falls in.

The intent of our PE curriculum is to embed healthy physical habits for life and develop an enjoyment in a wide range of sports and activities which we encourage our children to develop beyond the school day. We aim to expose our children to sports and outdoor activities that they may not have had the chance to experience before in the hope that this will broaden their horizons and ambitions for sports in the future.

Our school environment provides Physical Education teaching spaces which enhance provision: Multi-use Games Areas, hall with gym equipment, forest area for outdoor skills and orienteering and a large field for athletics and track activities. We also use the swimming pool at the University of Chester, where all of our key stage 2 children learn to swim and keep safe in water.

We use The Power of PE to support teachers in their weekly delivery of PE (click below for an example).
