Our vocabulary allows us to interpret the world, to express ourselves with greater clarity, to show confidence, insight and perceptiveness. Words lie at the heart of the quest to narrow gaps between the advantaged and disadvantaged, to address social mobility. Word knowledge is critical for success in every subject and as such we provide a wealth of opportunities for our pupils to become word conscious:

  • Vocabulary is explicitly taught within Read to Write with sets of words and phrases explored for each vehicle and model text (4 sets per half term).
  • Word Aware strategies are used to support retention and application of at least 2 words per week, related to themes in English.
  • Concept Cat is used in Reception to teach concept words daily. Concepts are words that shape how we think about the world and include words such as ‘different’ ‘many’ and ‘large’. Having a good understanding of concepts is fundamental for later learning in subjects such as maths, science and history.
  • Word Aware strategies are used in all subjects across the curriculum.
  • The school environment is language-rich to promote language learning and encourage engagement with words and interaction: labels, interactive displays, books related to current topics, continuous provision, P4C enquiries and other opportunities for children to explore open-ended questions.
  • Every week, a EYFS/KS1 and KS2 word of the week is given by our SALT lead.
