Statement of intent – Physical Education

Intent:

At J H Godwin primary school, the intent of teaching Physical Education is to give children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. We strongly believe that all children should have access to a thoroughly planned and progressive physical education programme, which places a real emphasis on developing a wide range of physical competences, while encouraging healthy competition and teamwork.

Throughout the children’s time at J H Godwin, our teachers strive to equip all children with necessary skills, knowledge and range of physical experiences to motive them to lead lifelong active and healthy lifestyles. Physical education, challenges children and promotes self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It can teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team-based activities. Within dance and gymnastics, it will allow children to explore their personal and spiritual identity.

Implementation:

PE at J H Godwin is taught mainly by class teachers, with the exception of swimming coaches and a specialist cricket coach. Our teachers use and follow the PE HUB scheme to which they utilise the coaching videos, resources and knowledge cards, to help them plan, deliver and evaluate high quality PE lessons, each week. Our physical education curriculum is carefully planned to include a range of indoor and outdoor based lessons throughout the year. This provides a varied and progressive learning programme. All children receive at least one hour of engaging, high quality and enjoyable physical education lessons per week, as well as taking part in at least half an hour of physical activities per day, during break and lunch times. Appropriate provisions are in place to support a range of learning needs and abilities to ensure inclusiveness and positive outcomes for all children.

During KS1, children are taught to develop their fundamental movement skills and to become increasingly competent and confident with their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Children will be encouraged to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and cooperative physical activities in a range of challenge activities.

During KS2, children are taught how to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. Children will learn how to communicate, collaborate and compete against each other successfully, showing good teamwork. Children will develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports, learning how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Impact:

  • Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise
  • Children will enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity
  • Children will develop a love of activity, which becomes part of their future life outside of primary school
